Both have specific meanings, regardless how closely they do or don't apply to actual CalArts students or training. Then again, he's also conflating how John Kricfalusi and his following use the term with how the Internet in general is using it right now. Not to mention it's also being used as an excuse to be a bullying d*ck to people who likes things about the style or is using it for an art program.Ĭlick to expand. He's not wrong about "CalArts style" not really being an accurate descriptor. So to the people who think this is taking a dump on people who have gripes with it or is just a propaganda tool to tell people to like it or else that isn't what he's saying here at all. If you have gripes with a series with how it looks or anything else that's fine but at least explain in better detail about why you don't like it as opposed to doing contrived things to make oneself look smart. It's not really a good way to describe what IS actually wrong with a series along with talking about why you don't like a certain art style. While I don't exactly share his sentiments about characters like the original Lion O he isn't wrong about the term calarts being used to insult or talk down to certain art styles in a pretentious manner by people who try too hard to look smart and act like they know everything about what makes good animation is becoming borderline comical.
